The following is our June 2010 fundraising letter:

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As we celebrate our 33rd year of service to the Lewisboro community, we are proud of the professionalism and dedication of our volunteers and their commitment to respond to medical and trauma emergencies every hour and every day of the year. We also reflect, with equal pride, on the consistent generosity and support of you and your neighbors that makes this possible. All the necessary funds that keep us going are raised by our members through Letters of Appeal, a Father's Day bake sale, our Annual Auction, memorial or other special donations and grants. LVAC is not funded by any town, state or federal agency.

Last year we responded to over 400 emergency calls. Now, with summer rapidly approaching, LVAC EMTs are preparing for 911 calls for heat related emergencies. High temperatures, high humidity, and high exertion are key factors that lead to a heat emergency. People suffer heat-related illness when the body's temperature control system breaks down. Infants and the elderly are the most susceptible to heat related illnesses. Athletes and laborers are also at risk, as well as anyone exposed to extreme heat, humidity or exertion for a prolonged period.

Heat stroke is the most serious type of heat-related emergency. It is life threatening and requires immediate treatment. Body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes after extreme or prolonged exposure. Brain damage and death may result unless the body is cooled quickly. The warning signs of heat stroke vary but may include: confusion or unconsciousness, an extremely high body temperature (above 103°F); red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating); a rapid, strong pulse; constricted pupils (very small); throbbing headache; dizziness and nausea. If you see any of these signs, have someone call 911 immediately while you begin cooling the victim.

While your generous financial support keeps the ambulances responding with a fully equipped and trained crew, equally critical to our continued ability to serve you is the availability of our volunteer EMTs, Drivers and First Aiders. Please consider joining this very special group of dedicated people in service to our community. No experience is necessary. All training will be provided including First Aid, CPR and specialized training if you are interested in becoming a driver. LVAC will also sponsor anyone who wishes to become a Certified New York State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

You Depend on Us and We depend On You. Please give generously now!
